Who is Jesus?

Jesus or Jesus Christ or Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God whom He sent to save the world. He was born of Mary, a virgin, and Joseph, a carpenter and a descendant of David. Jesus Christ is the central figure of Christianity. Scholars believe that Jesus was a Jew and was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River.

Before we go any further on who Jesus is and account His life here on earth, let’s journey back to where it all began. Jesus was born about 2000 years ago in a manger in Bethlehem. Three wise men and shepherds visited him. King Herod, who was the King of Bethlehem during that time, was jealous of Him because many were saying that He would be the King and rule the world. King Herod even plotted to kill Jesus but the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph and warned him about Herod’s plan. Joseph, Mary and Jesus went to Egypt to escape Herod’s plot.

When Jesus was twelve years old, his parents, Mary and Joseph, brought Him to the temple with them. Jesus stayed behind, without His parents’ knowledge, and began teaching in the temple. When Mary and Joseph finally realized He was not with them, they went back to the temple to search for Him. And there they found Him sitting with older people telling them about God.

All through his early life up until His early adult life, He was with His parents, probably working with his father, Joseph.

Jesus began His ministry when He was 30 years old. He went to the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist. After His baptism, Satan tried tempting Him but He couldn’t be tempted until finally, Satan left Him.

Soon thereafter, Jesus began His ministry. He chose His twelve disciples namely: Andrew, Simon Peter, James (son of Zebedee), John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alpheus), Thaddeus, Simon and Judas Iscariot.

As part of Jesus’ ministry, He preached about the good news and eternal life mostly through parables, He was a healer and performed miracles such as turning water into wine and bringing back dead people to life. Jesus gave hope to people who have lost all hope.

With all the great things that Jesus was doing it was no surprise that people, especially those who have authority, became jealous and plotted to kill Him.

And so, Pontius Pilate, Julius Ceasar and the authorities, along with some of the people who at first were following Him, sent Jesus to die on the cross. Judas Isacariot, one of Jesus’ disciples, betrayed Him by telling the guards and soldiers where He was.

Before He was crucified, Jesus was beaten up, whipped until He was almost dead. He carried the cross where He was to be hung and walked around before He reached Golgotha. People, who came to believe Him and accepted Him as the Messiah, were all in anguish over what befell Jesus. They cried and stayed at the foot of His cross until His last breath. Mary, Jesus’ mother and John, His brother, were there, too.

When Jesus drew His last breath, the sky became dark and the wind became fierce. His body was taken down from the cross, was wrapped in cloth linen and was placed in a tomb.

On the third day, Jesus rose from the death to fulfill the prophecy.

Who is Jesus? Jesus is the Messiah. He redeemed us by dying on the cross for our sins. And if we only believe in Him and accept Him as our Lord and Savior, we will have everlasting life and will spend eternity with Him.
